Our neighbors to the north have always lead me to believe they were a peace and snow loving people.  When I learned they had developed and tested a homosexual screening device I was rather perplexed.  Who needs a tool such as this besides Neo Nazis?
Many a thought ran through my head as I researched it further and found that the government had funded the entire project and testing costs.  As other concerned taxpayers of the 1950’s and 60’s might opine, is was the Canadian governments attempt to weed out homosexuals from government jobs.  This included the police force, military and civil services. While the citizenry referred to tool as a slot machine (fruit machine) due to the weak science and somewhat subversive intent. The RCMP compiled files, similar to Hoover, of over 9,000 suspected homosexuals. The RCMP actually created a new section in the security service to deal with this plague.

The Canadian government lead it’s employees to believe the dentist-chair-looking machine was used to measure stress. A series of pictures would display on the screen and the subject’s pupils, sweat and heart movements would be monitored for “erotic palpatations.” Some of the pictures were mundane but others were sexually provocative of both men and women.

The fruit machine was in use until the late 1960s when the government pulled all funding for the project. However that did not mark the end of the efforts to remove homosexuals from government service, and the RCMP continued to compile dossiers on suspected gays for years. A similar device called a plethysmograph, which connected directly to the subject’s genitals, was used for similar purposes after the fruit machine was retired, but the Canadian government eventually put a halt to the RCMP’s anti-homosexual activities. Plethysmographs are still in use today in investigating suspected pedophiles, but their accuracy is highly controversial.

In the quiet morning mist we await the sun to tear off our fog pajamas and shake us into consciousness.
